WILLIAM THOMSON, AUSTRALIANS (R.N.) Not listed by CWGC. William is believed to have been serving as an officer on a British Transport ship when he was killed as the result of an explosion. He had enlisted as William James Thomson, Private (554) in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force in Sydney, New South Wales in July 1915 and he was posted to Rabaul in German New Guinea but he was discharged two months later. No reason is given. He was an engineer and gave his address as c/o the Queen's Hotel Crown Street, Sydney, NSW. William was brought up on Castle Farm and on Newark Farm in Sanquhar and in 1911, aged 24, he was assisting his father in the running of Newark Farm. Son of James and Mary (Ramsay) Thomson of Newark Farm, Sanquhar. Died on 18 March 1917. Burial place not known. - Geoffrey Gillon |
