Pte. David Maben, whose name appeared in a recent casualty list as having been killed, was well known at Penola. He was 24 years of age. He came to South Australia from Dunfrieshire, Scotland, about four or five years ago, and almost immediately settled at Coonawarra, where
he worked for Mr. James Alexander for about two years. He then worked on the East West line, but returned to Penola for Christmas, 1914, and enlisted in January, 1915. He embarked in the following March. He was in the Gallipoli campaign and then went to France. The deceased was of a genial disposition, and was popular.
