WELL-KNOWN DUNDEE MAN
KILLED IN ACTION AT GALLIPOLI.
Many in Dundee will learn with regret of the death of Sergeant Martin Russell Dawson, who was well known in business circles in the city. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 27th August.
Sergeant Dawson went through the South African War, being three times wounded, and had settled in Australia. He enlisted again on the outbreak of the war, and early in May went to the Dardanelles with the Australian Expeditionary Force. On May 25 he was erroneously reported killed, but a letter received from a soldier who was by his side when he fell leaves no room for doubt that he was killed in action on 27th August. The writer says :–” Sergeant Dawson is sadly missed. There was not a better soldier or braver man in our lines.”
Sergeant Dawson was thirty-seven years of age, and was the younger son of Mr D. R. Dawson, Taycliffe, Tayport.
