A fruitgrower originally from England, he came to Australia aged 21 years, having studied farming in Paxford, Worcestershire. Gnr Betts enlisted on 27 November 1914 and embarked from Melbourne aboard SS Hessen on 2 February 1915. He completed his training as a gunner of the 102nd Howitzer Battery in Egypt and took part in the landing on the Galliploi Pensinsula, fought throughout that campaign and was in the final evacuation. He served in France during 1916 at the Somme battles. He was wounded on 19 April 1917 near Bapaume and died on the following day in the Australian Field Hospital, aged 30 years.
