DEATH OF PTE. J. D. NETHERCOTE
On Friday night, at 9 o'clock, the death occurred at the residence of his parents, of Pte. Jas. David Nethercote, late of the 4th Pioneer Batt., A.I.F.
The deceased soldier, who was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Nethercote, "Braeside," Pine-street. North Ipswich, attended at the North Ipswich railway workshops, on Wednesday, where he was employed as a fitter, and on returning home in the evening became ill. Medical aid was summoned, but the deceased passed away as previously stated. The late Pte. Nethercote was on active service for a period of two years and was discharged on July 18th. 1918, on account of illness, following on a gas attack and trench fever, sustained at Messines. A younger brother of the deceased died as a result of wounds received on July 4th, 1918, at Hamel. Yesterday afternoon the body of the late Pte. Nethercote was accorded a military funeral. A firing party from Brisbane, under the command of Sgt. Lincoln, attended and marched in company with a contingent of 116 Ipswich men who were in charge of Lieut . G. Allen and Sergt.-Major S. M. O'Farrell. Others present were Rev. T. Hely Wilson. and Flight Lieut. V. P. Barbat. The pall-bearers were Ptes. A. Jeffrey (president of the Ipswich branch, R.S.S.I.L.A.). Lube. Broughton, Jarvis, Woods, and W. Jenyns first five mentioned being members of the battalion to which the deceased belonged. The Model band (under bandmaster H. J. Harper), played "The Dead March," with muffled drum, en route to the cemetery. The flag bearer of the R.S.S.I.L.A. carried the pennant at half-mast. Included in the procession were members of the P.A.F.S.O.A. of which lodge the deceased was a member. The Rev. G. Cameron Wood officiated at the graveside, and the P.W.M. Bro. R. E. Mason, read the P.A.F.S.O.A. service. The firing party discharged a volley over the grave of their deceased comrade and the Last Post was sounded: by- Sergt, W. Devlin, Bugler Lavell, and Bugler Jackson. The arrangements for the military funeral were carried out by Pte. F. J Barbat (secretary), and Sergt,-Major S. M. O'Farrell. Among the wreaths placed on the coffin was one from the R.S.S.I.L.A., Ipswich sub-branch.
