“MALTON SOLDIER KILLED: FINE EXAMPLE OF PATRIOTISM AND SELF-SACRIFICE - As briefly announced in our last issue, Mr. Jonathan Wardill, saddler, Malton, has received, under date March 14th, official information that his son, Pte. Charles Wardill, Australian Imperial Force, who was previously reported missing, is now reported to have been killed in action on August 30th last, whilst serving with the British Expeditionary Force in France. Enclosed with the sad intelligence was the following message of condolence from their Majesties the King and Queen - ‘The King commands me to assure you of the true sympathy of his Majesty and the Queen in your sorrow.’ The deceased soldier was 24 years of age, single, and prior to the outbreak of war had a three hundred acre farm at Wondai, Queensland. He was one of the first to respond to the call of the Old Country - three months after hostilities opened - and such was his patriotism and self sacrifice that he travelled a thousand miles in order to take up arms in the fight for freedom. The thousand miles brought him to Sydney, then he travelled to Melbourne, six hundred miles and from thence to Alexandria. He was in the great Dardanelles flight and at the end of seven months was wounded. He had another spell in hospital as a result of nerve strain and was next at Malta from which place he went to Egypt, finally being transferred to the fighting lines in France. Some time ago he was reported missing, but now, as already stated, he is officially reported killed. A pathetic fact is that deceased had hoped to get married after the war. Mr. Wardill has two other sons in the Army and we feel sure the family will have the sympathy of townspeople generally in the loss they have sustained by the death of such a gallant soldier boy.”
