Lenham is a market village in Kent situated on the southern edge of the North Downs.
Disaster Victim. A native of England, Hodgkin served as a Able Seaman in the Royal Australian Navy. He was a crew member on board the Australian Submarine, the 'AE-1' (Australia's First Submarine), on September 14, 1914, when it sank for no reason in the Bismarck Sea while on patrol with the destroyer 'Parramatta.' In all, 35 crew members were lost at sea. No enemy action was suspected in her sinking. The submarine has never been found.
The submarine's location was not discovered until 1917 off the Duke of York Island group.
